Snacks: Preserved nutmeg slices

Nutmeg is one ingredient that I love. Nutmeg oil and preserved nutmeg being my favourites. This thing for nutmeg is definitely my maternal grandmother's doing. Grandma brought me up to understand and enjoy foods that she grew up with in Kuala Lumpur before she came to settle in Singapore after the war.

I guess my mania for mee hoon kway, pong piah, hew piah, arrow-head (only now), pork/fish floss, seafood, melon seeds, dried scallops and nutmeg were cultivated through meals with my maternal grandmother. I'd almost clean forgotten that she loves chewing on preserved nutmeg till she offered me some last weekend. Thanks to a visiting relative who brought many Malaysian snacks over, I finally had the chance to feast on a few snacks that I rarely ever get my hands on!

I'm not a fussy snacker but some titbits are best eaten only when they are made by bona fide confectioneries and factories close to the source of the raw ingredients. My mom was horrified watching her mother (grandma) and I finishing up almost an entire pack of preserved nutmeg last weekend! Enjoying the pack of nutmeg quietly with grandma bought back memories of the afternoons we spent snacking together with my late grandfather when I was still a kid.

Too precious to finish all at one go, I brought the remaining nutmeg home... I didn't take a picture of my other favourite Malaysian snack - preserved lime - finished up a box!

Note:
NEVER NEVER NEVER leave snacks on the table when mumusings is around. I used to gobble up all sorts of snacks and dried foods when I was a kid it made my grandmother hide some away, especially her expensive dried  large scallops.
